Microsoft makes Databricks a first-party service on Azure: How it integrates with open source techno

Director of Product Yatharth Gupta shared five reasons why Databricks runs well on Azure. Azure Databricks is the only first-party service offered for Databricks. Gupta highlighted engineering partnerships, mission-critical support, access to the Azure ecosystem, native security and identity, as well as rapid onboarding. Currently, Azure Databricks is available in 34 datacenter regions.

The integration is so tight that although the Databricks product itself comes from a third-party, the service is in fact a first-party offering from Microsoft. So rather than procuring it via the marketplace, you instead provision it as you would other services with the Azure brand and Azure's Enterprise-grade SLAs apply to the ADB service.

The Azure implementation of Databricks is so tightly integrated with Azure that the service is a first-party Microsoft offering provisioned as with other Azure-branded services such as Azure HDInsight, even while the Databricks product itself is from a third-party (albeit designed in collaboration with Microsoft).

So, for third-party apps, you'll only have a service principal in Enterprise applications. For first-party apps that are internal, you'll have something in both places - one to define the app (App registrations) and one to allow the app to actually sign in to Azure AD (Enterprise applications). When you define the first-party app in the App registrations, you'll also automatically create an entry in Enterprise apps. If you look at the two entries, you'll see that the Application ID links the two together.

To expand the global reach of the Unified Analytics Platform, Databricks recently announced a joint product partnership with Microsoft. The new alliance addresses customer demand for Spark on Microsoft Azure by offering the Unified Analytics Platform as a First Party Service called Azure Databricks. This new integrated service makes it easier for organizations around the globe to derive value from their Big Data and realize the promise of AI. With Azure Databricks, customers can accelerate innovation with one-click set up and effortless integration with a wide variety of Microsoft data stores and services. 2ff7e9595c
